ARTIST BIO
Kimaya Diggs
Website: http://www.kimayadiggs.com/
Rooted in her jazz, folk, and opera musical background, Kimaya Diggs has mastered a genre-defying style. Inspired by the acrobatic folk renderings of Joni Mitchell, Ella Fitzgerald’s jazz stylings, and Lianne LaHavas’ soulful charisma, she draws skillfully from her lineage of musical pioneers, creating a musical lane all her own. With a playful presence and frank, transporting storytelling, Diggs’ mastery of her voice is the focal point of each performance, and a transfixing experience.
Kimaya’s debut album, “Breastfed” (2018), is a bittersweet chronicle of growth toward the light. Recklessly urgent, irreverent and defiant in the face of the past, “Breastfed” boldly wrangles the pain and glory of a growing-up narrative, claiming its narrative with spirit and dark humor. The single “How Am I Sposta Know” made the top 10 in tastemaker radio station 93.9 The River’s Best New Songs of 2018.
As a teaching artist and collaborator, Kimaya has captivated audiences around the world with her sister trio, the Diggs Sisters, and Northern Harmony, performing 21 international folk styles in 27 different languages. Kimaya has written soundtracks, libretti, and themes for several plays, operas, and podcasts.
ABOUT THE VENUE
The Shea is a theater which keeps reinventing itself. Established in 1927 by Denis Shea, this up-to-date movie theater was designed in the "Spanish" style so popular in the Hollywood of the twenties. That time is still vivid in the minds of some Turners Falls residents as a time of five cent matinees, movie serials and (in the thirties) dish nights, when you could see a movie and add a piece of "Depression Glass" or china to your table setting. Nowadays, The Shea provides performance space for a variety of attractions designed to appeal to the widest range of tastes. Musical offerings include folk, pop, rock, swing, jazz, country and traditional. Theatrical productions encompass musical comedy, drama, comedy, and political satire. In addition, audiences can take advantage of magic shows, children's shows and silent film revivals.
ABOUT CouchMusic.Live
CouchMusic.Live is the independent music lover's guide to virtual live music experiences from around the corner and across the web. As a livestreaming cooperative, the CouchMusic team brings together industry professionals from around the US with one common purpose - to provide a platform for artists, fans, venues, promoters, and labels to come together and to build a resilient community in the new frontier of the suddenly digitized live music arena. The site currently features a blog of livestream previews and reviews, a high quality virtual venue featuring some of our favorite performers, and curated listings of streams by both local and mainstream musicians. The organization strives to shed light on the importance of the grassroots scene, especially within the context of this challenging time. By connecting the silos of the industry and beyond, we aim to be an inclusive and empowering force of good in a world desperately needing guidance towards a path of unity and respect.
KEEP IT SAFE
The safety of the artist and venue/production staff are our #1 priority. All CouchMusic.Live shows are socially distanced and follow best practices for preventative measures, such as mask wearing and hand washing. It is our goal to provide artists and venues an opportunity to keep bringing live music to the world while still staying safe. We support common sense safety measures that protect us all and, ultimately, ensure that we can continue to present shows like this into the future.

Exciting News for A Happening IV: Leviathan
Cloudgaze and Eggtooth Productions are thrilled to announce that we have received a generous grant from the Markham-Nathan Fund for Social Justice to support our 2024 Immersive Arts Festival, “A Happening IV: Leviathan.”
This festival will transform the Shea Theater into an exploration of theme, hosting installations, music, theatrical performances, and movement pieces, featuring the collective contributions of over 30 local artists. Audiences will experience otherworldly environments and narratives inspired by folklore, fairy tales, horror motifs, American literature, and the mythos of the Old Testament, all of which delve into the central question guiding the festival: "What does it mean to encounter something greater than yourself and to be consumed by it?" Through this theme, we explore how a community reemerges and imagines itself after destruction and transformation.
With the support of the Markham-Nathan Fund, we are excited to create an event that complicates perspectives and fosters meaningful dialogue. We are grateful for this partnership and for the work of the Markham-Nathan Fund for Social Justice.
Thanks to the Mass Cultural Council for their vital support this year. We'd also like to thank the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts for their support in the form of a Flexible Funding grant. We couldn't do this work without you!
